Procter & Gamble announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of Iams ProActive Health Cat and Kitten Food in 3 oz and 5.5oz cans. Dates on the bottom of the recalled cans range from 09/2011 to 06/2012. For further information or a product refund call P & G toll-free at 877-340-8826, M-F 9am-7pm EST. This recall is due to incorrect levels of thiamine-an essential part of a cat's diet. Discontinue use of this product right away.

Consumers of this product should monitor their cat for signs of thiamine deficiency, including reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea, and salivation. Advanced signs may include seizures, falling, circling, or downward curving of the neck. If you have any concerns at all about your cat, please see a veterinarian immediately. Pregnant cats should be seen immediately as their unborn babies are at risk.

Latest action, July 31, 2009     We should applaud Congressman Thaddeus McCotter's efforts to pass a bill to make pet care expenses tax-deductible. HR 3501, commonly referred to as the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years or HAPPY Act, would amend the IRS code to allow an individual to deduct up to $3500 in a taxable year for qualified pet care expenses. The bill defines qualified as "amounts paid in connection with providing care (including veterinary care) for a qualified pet expense other than any expense in connection with the acquisition of the qualified pet." "This bill will provide pet owners the opportunity to deduct pet care expenses ensuring adequate veterinary care for their pets," said NAPPS President Monica Leighton, owner of Professional Pet Sitting in Venice, Fla. "During these hard economic times, this legislation is essential because it encourages responsible pet ownership and will potentially reduce the number of pets that are abandoned due to the lack of resources. We encourage all animal lovers to contact their members of Congress and voice their support for HR 3501." You can view the details of this bill at http://thomas.loc.gov/home/c111query.html Once you arrive at this page, then you can enter a search by bill number.
